During this next week, we will continue our work on the characters. The characters help us to understand what is happening within the story. We will learn that readers don’t just say what they see on the page. They look carefully at the pictures and use them to remember what the characters were doing, saying, and thinking on that page. Readers also consider the feelings of the characters. A reader will stop often and think about how characters say and do thing in their books. These give readers clues to figure out how characters feel.
A new topic to discuss with your child is the setting of the story. As you are reading, talk with your child about where the character or characters of the story are. You can also show your child the different places the character may visit throughout the story. This can be a difficult subject for children to understand in the beginning.
Please continue to have your child discuss a book you read. Focus on the characters in the story, how important they are to the story, and the setting. We will continue to revisit many of our "Old Favorites as well.
Encourage your child to practice pointing to words as they are reading.
