The start of a new unit! This means we are concluding our first unit. We do assess students on their writing using a rubric. We understand that for many students, writing like this is brand new and takes time getting used to and developing an understanding how to write stories. Students will not receive any "U's" (unsatisfactory) in writing for the first quarter. It is important that you note their strengths and weaknesses as we note on their rubrics for you to work on at home. Keeping journals or diaries and writing letters are fun ways for children to practice drawing pictures, writing words and sharing their thoughts with others.
For our next writing unit (Show & Tell); it is all about labeling items, stretching out words, listening to the letter sounds, to try and spell more and more words. Make sure you are practicing not only letter recognition at home, but the sounds they make, too! We will need you to send in 1 object from home that your child LOVES (maybe something they've had for a long time, something they love to play with, or holds special memories). These objects are things children will be writing about for 2 weeks, so they will be staying at school. Therefore, objects need to be able to fit inside of their cubby, think the size of a lunch box or smaller. They will be writing about this object in detail, labeling parts and creating stories about it. Please send this item in no later than October 1st. After the 2 weeks, we will "show and tell" special places we've been (i.e. grandma's house, the beach, etc.). At the end, we put it all together!
